““My time at Homerton College, University of Cambridge has been a life-altering experience. I cannot begin to describe how much of a blessing this experience has been. I have been given the opportunity to study among intellectuals from all over the world, but the learning process has not been restricted to the classroom. It is actually outside the classroom where I’ve done most of my learning. The discussions often held around the dinner table give a better understanding of the global community in which we live. I learn how people from other parts of the world perceive the American citizen, and I hope to have influenced their opinions of us. Although ‘thank you’ could never fully express my gratitude, I would like to start by saying thank you, and I hope my contribution to the global community fulfills the investment you have made.”

In 2009, the ESU celebrates its 40th Anniversary of enabling select students attending United Negro College Fund institutions, Hampton University or Howard University to spend their junior year at a British university of their choice through the unique, merit-based Luard Scholarship program.

Since the inaugural 1969-70 academic year, 68 Luard Scholars have performed with distinction at 18 different British universities, including Oxford University, Cambridge University, Edinburgh University, Nottingham University, and the London School of Economics and Political Science. They have served as exemplary unofficial ambassadors for the United States while abroad and for British higher education upon returning home.
The outstanding sophomores who are granted Luard Scholarships receive full tuition for a junior year of study at a British University of their choosing, plus a stipend to cover travel and living expenses.
